ADVOCATES, NURSES, & YOUTH HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE
After
the Altria Meeting was done, youth, nurses, and other tobacco
control advocates gathered in front of the large "Altria
Pack of Lies" cigarette pack at the corner of Kraft's property
for a press conference.
Patrick
Delaney, a regional vice president of the American Cancer Society,
kicked it off by welcoming everyone to New Jersey, adding that
Altria is NOT welcome. New Jersey, the "ashtray of the region"
(bordered by smokefree New York and Delaware), wants smokefree
air to move in, NOT a tobacco company!
Nurses
involved with the NIGHTENGALES then unfurled a long banner depicting
letters sent to the tobacco industry from relatives of people
who have been killed by tobacco products. The angry, heart-wrenching
letters were discovered through online searches of tobacco industry
documents. One by one, each nurse read a letter and brought home
the human toll of tobacco. Photos: 1,

Next, two youth who attending the Altria Meeting spoke. Jessica
Harvey of Reality Check (NY) exhibited Marlboro baby clothing
from Benin that she planned to expose in the meeting, before
CEO Louis Camilleri abruptly cut off the comment period. Whether
or not this shirt is a "rip off", company as rich and
powerful as Altria should be able to stop promotions like these,
said Jessica. More photos: 1,

Moustapha
Drame, a youth leader with Mouvement Anti-Tabac du Senegal,
then stepped up, displayed his country's flag, and showed examples
of how Philip Morris/Altria targets youth in his country. He also
spoke of actions that Senegalese youth are taking to hold the
tobacco industry accountable and closed with a message of solidarity
for U.S. youth.
It
was then "open-bullhorn" time for youth to speak out.
